The Tragedy that Every Parent Must Endure

A couple of months ago, I was invited to write a post for the very popular What to Expect When You are Expecting website.  They wanted  me to write something for their “Real Mom Stories” series, so this isn’t one of my usual kid’s activity posts.   Visit the site to read:  The Tragedy that Every Parent Must Endure.  (And please leave a comment to let me know what you think about it!)

Thank you for your honesty. It takes great courage to put yourself in such a vulnerable position.

I home educate my boy and I feel constantly pulled in all directions 24/7. It feels like a battle of the needs sometimes and when I make housework or my writing, planning and research the priority I often feel guilty. How can such things be more important than being present for my child? Even the educational activities we do together feel like my agenda and therefore not really being present to him.

Yet even if I am with him and doing something which he has suggested or instigated, it is so hard to be fully present when all these other things pull away at me. I wonder: was it like this for my own mother, or is it a sign of the times we live in? That technology has resulted in scattered thinking and being overwhelmed by all these demands for our attention? I want to simplify my life, yet everything seems to be important and it is hard to know how, or where to begin.

I appreciate your comment. I so agree about wanting to simplify, but not knowing where to start. I am so frustrated with the feeling that no matter what I am doing, I should be doing something else.
